Ghosts, Mutual Aid, and New Material: Disparition Live at HM157

Disparition performing mostly new material at HM157’s community benefit held on September 4.

On Friday, September 4, 2026, Disparition stepped into the open-air courtyard of HM157 in Lincoln Heights to play a 45-minute set of mostly unreleased material.

On paper, it was a community benefit. The evening’s mission had two purposes: raise critical funds to keep HM157 standing as a living monument and creative sanctuary, and pull together resources to fund meals for unhoused neighbors in the surrounding blocks.

If you’ve never been to HM157 (historically known as the Horace P. Dibble House), you’re meeting a piece of LA that refuses to die. Built in the 1880s, the Victorian house carries a local horror-legacy pedigree—including a delightfully ghoulish, possibly apocryphal brush with murder. For the last two decades, however, its ghosts have had to share closet space with a much busier tenant: an anchor of the L.A. underground arts scene and grassroots mutual aid networks, quietly churning out film shoots, DIY shows, and late-night experiments.

Disparition’s set included mostly new material performed publicly for only the second time. Alongside Disparition, the evening’s bill featured boisterous sets by Boustrophedon and Tinglez, framed by an impeccably curated DJ set from Richard E of Further Out Recordings, creating a cohesive arc of sound that ranged from intricate ambient-acoustic to stripped down industrial to rave-adjacent disco.

In a city that loves to bulldoze its own memory to make room for another overpriced parking garage, places like HM157—and the artists who show up to keep their lights (and kitchens) on—are rare oxygen. If you missed the set, you can still watch the full performance and support the ongoing ecosystem of grassroots spaces and mutual aid in LA below.
